What are Cataracts?

At birth, the natural lens of the eye is very clear. As time passes, this lens becomes cloudy, and when it begins to interfere with vision it is called a cataract. Cataracts are treated by an operation that removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens implant (intraocular lens or IOL). Watch the videos below to learn more about cataracts and how they can be treated with surgery.

Multifocal Lens Implant / IOL

Traditional intraocular lens implants (IOLs) that are placed in the eye at the time of cataract surgery are only designed for vision at a fixed distance. With these lenses, patients must use reading glasses or bifocals in order to see at close range. Multifocal IOLs can give a full range of vision from up close to far away without glasses. In order for these lenses to work well, the eye should be otherwise healthy to achieve the best vision. Also, the design of multifocal IOLs may cause patients to see glare or halos around lights at night. Learn more about multifocal IOLs in the video below:

Toric Lens Implant/ IOL

Astigmatism is an uneven curvature of the eye that can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Fortunately, for patients with cataracts, astigmatism can be treated at the time of cataract surgery with toric lens implants or corneal incisions. Standard intraocular lens implants (IOLs) can correct for nearsightedness or farsightedness but not astigmatism. A toric IOL has additional power in a specific direction to correct astigmatism. Corneal incisions are less accurate than toric IOLs but are effective in lowering astigmatism. Patients who choose to have their astigmatism corrected can see more clearly without glasses after surgery. Learn more about these options in the videos below:
