Our LASIK Technology
Porter Ophthalmology has provided quality LASIK SMILE and PRK procedures since 1973 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
LASIK is a two-step procedure that can improve vision by changing the shape of the cornea in the front of the eye. The goal of LASIK is to include the correction needed from glasses or contact lenses onto the eye to give great natural vision without artificial aids.
The first step of laser vision correction uses the Zeiss Visumax femtosecond laser to create a precise thin flap in the cornea. The Visumax laser is extremely fast and places many tiny bubbles in the cornea that join together to form the flap. This laser has a very gentle touch on the eye and is quite comfortable for our patients. With this light pressure, laser eye surgery patients are able to maintain their vision throughout the procedure.
In the second step of LASIK, the flap is lifted to expose the central layers of the cornea. Then, the WaveLight EX500 laser is used to reshape the cornea according to a custom computer-generated plan designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This laser provides custom wavefront optimized LASIK. Following this second laser treatment, the flap is replaced and naturally seals itself in place.
